The two best credit union-related conferences in the world are the CUES Experience conference (being held this week in Minneapolis) and the Forum/Trabian Symposium, slated for October.
They’re not the best conferences because I’ll be there. I go there because they’re the best conferences.
The speaker roster for the Forum/Trabian conference is almost full (check out the current list here). There’s one speaking slot open — and it will be filled by whomever wins an video audition. To date, two entries have been submitted.
At the risk of ticking off the two entrants — Ginny Brady and Andy LaFlamme — I’m putting out this call to enlist more candidates.
It’s not that I wouldn’t love to see either of the two (or both) of them speaking at the conference. Instead, it’s because I know that there a lot of people in credit union land doing innovative things that the Symposium attendees would love to hear about and discuss.
And if you’re a vendor, look, you could spend $10k to secure a speaking slot at some CU conference that might attract 250-500 people who couldn’t care less about your presentation because they’re only at the conference because it’s at some fancy schmancy resort.
Or you could submit your audition video, and get a shot to present to 125-150 (or more, since this was last year’s attendance count) CU decision makers who go to the conference to learn, network, and share (not that Fishers, IN isn’t a fancy schmancy place to go). And it won’t cost you anything more than your travel costs.
You’ve got until the end of June to submit your audition tape. Actually, I don’t think you even need to submit it. Create it, put it up on your blog or on YouTube, and I’ll betcha $5 the folks at Forum or Trabian will hear about it one way or another.
C’mon! There are a few of you out there who I’m thinking should be submitting something here. Don’t make me call you out by name.

How dare you dilute my chances of winning!
Just kidding, the more the merrier!
I am interested in being considered as a speaker. I don’t have a video yet, but I do have about 35 Powerpoint slides and a terrific subject, investment education. My topics include the fundamentals of stocks and bonds, IRA’s, 401K’s, advantages of mutual funds, diversification, index funds, no load funds and the risks and rewards of various equity and fixed income investments. I also discuss the advantages of compound interest, reducing transaction costs, asset allocation, investment tax rates, the risks of day trading and buying gold as well as other speculative investments. I can divide the topics into any number of thirty or sixty minute sessions. All the information takes about four hours to cover if done continuously. I do have one warning. I teach how to reduce investment transactions fees by over 90%. Investment salesmen do not like investors to be educated for obvious reasons.
I feel I am qualified to teach investments because I have earned an MBA, have studied investments for over 25 years and during the 1980’s I was a Merrill Lynch stockbroker for one year. I am also a very successful investor who has helped many friends and relatives manage their life savings for several years. I write a monthly newsletter and just recently put a website on line at http://www.harryblack.net. Newsletters from the first of the year are contained on the website. I also speak at my local public library, private seminars and my own credit union, MSTELCO FCU, where I am assistant CFO and board member for eleven years.
I am interested in finding out whether my presentation would be appropriate for CU conferences. If so, are expenses and fees paid? By the way, I just retired and would like to develop speaking and consulting into a full time second career. I absolutely do not sell investments of any kind. Any advice or suggestions you have for my will be sincerely appreciated.

“It’s like watching Dancing With the Stars meets DiSC personality system!”
Personality styles and business: we all have heard how our particular personality or temperament affects how we interact with customers and peers alike. Most of us have had to endure taking several “personality tests” and sit through programs that we know have valuable content but afterward we can’t remember if we are an “ENFJ,” or an “I,” or a “Director,” or whatever.
Enter my company: Tempo Temperaments, the only program that uses ballroom dance/music concepts to visualize the four main personalities. My program is like watching Dancing With the Stars meets the DiSC system! I use live costumed dance couples as examples of each personality style.
Click on my YouTube channel for a video demo and contact me for program options that range from me speaking to a small group to using several dance couples for over a 1,000 person audience, and everything in between.
